Great photo Brian. I'm sure I should know this & have probably been told before, but what was the purpose of the tall chimney to the left of the windmill?

That's from a photo Northbrook, not a postcard (although it does look like one) I have a couple more to scan yet. As for the chimney er.... I can't remember

I've never seen a photograph showing that chimney stack ..... where was it located ? Looks like it was somewhere around King's Lane or Crock Savages fields

That first photo is a 'new' one as far as I am concerned. If we still had that structure today it would have been a wonderful draw for tourists and no doubt the forum members would have been down most days, photographing it from every possible angle. I notice the tide was well and truly out. It looks as though they could have done with some help from a dredger back then!

That certainaly helps Brian ..... obviously I was way off in y guess for location I do recall seeing this last picture with the chimney stack in it now that you have re-posted it...does anyone know the reason for the Chimney being there ?

A little digging about the windmill shows that it was built by Robert Turner in 1802 and used by the firm of Isaac William Glenny & Sons for the production of flour and meal. A 16 horse power steam engine was later attached to the mill to allow it to operate in all weathers. would that chimney be for the steam engine? It could of course have nothing to do with the windmill, and could have been part of some other factory nearby ?

Yes Brian, I was asking my dad there and he tells me it was an auxciliary for the windmill when there was no wind power a furnace was lit which in turn, powered the steam engine in order to operate the mill in its normal capacity. It was somewhere near to where the Genoa is now a days.
