Gannaway swim revived for the 100th anniversary

#1 Post by Brian » Wed Jun 04, 2008 12:10 pm

From Ian Cumming at the east coast adventure centre:
To mark the 100 anniversary of the Warrenpoint Swimming Baths East Coast Adventure, in conjunction with Stephan Miller - a well known and respected open water swimmer, will be reviving the long forgotten "Gannaway swim". A select few swimmers from all over the country and a few locals will race from the beach at Warrenpoint around Gannaway rock and back. Ian Cumming, director of East Coast Adventure says, "It is great to see that the Baths are not only an ongoing concern for East Coast Adventure but also for the locals of Warrenpoint. East Coast have been utilising the Baths for fifteen years now for our activity programmes and as the watersports base for the business. The baths was certainly a centrepiece to the community 100 years ago and should still be an asset to Warrenpoint today and in the future. With some local support the baths could be regenerated to become a community facility once again." Unfortunately I can't open the baths for the public to view. The pool is broken and doesn't hold water, proving to be a H&S hazard.
(times and more details to follow)

Members who wish to take a look around will be given access at about 7pm, Ian is arranging for the gates to be unlocked to allow us to take a group photo (weather permitting) in front of the old kiosk and hopefully also get a few shots of the lough from the end of the baths. Anybody who intends to be there please let me know by replying below or via email.

Well done to everybody involved :cheers2:

An often discussed topic :D Locals always refer to it as the "Gunnaway rock" but the Admiralty charts have it as "Gannaway" so officially, it Gannaway, but locally its Gunnaway. :D confused yet? :-c

And Clonallon can officially be called Clonallen, Clonallan

My name used to be Toughill until some guy in a registry office in 1866 couldn`t manage the Gaelic pronunciation and changed it to Tohill........................................well, that`s one of the reasons....................

However, I, for one, am pleased to have any access and hope to be there Brian.
