Rostrevor to Warrenpoint and other local "Dashcam" footage

#1 Post by Brian » Sun Jan 01, 2012 6:29 pm

New years day 2012

Quick test of my mobile phones HD video recording as a "dash cam"

The mount I used was a standard window clamp with no vibration reduction (as you will see!) But for a first test it's not too bad. Also, as it was New Years day traffic was quite light so it also doubles up as a nice little video "road trip" for anyone who has not been here for a while. There is a bit more footage that I will upload later of around the town. I replaced the audio track in youtube with one of their "stock" recordings.

as before, you can choose to view in HD and full screen from this link:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eyA1oN6itVk

and Part 2

direct link

Don't forget in the direct links you can click on the little button that says "360p" (bottom right of the video) change that to 720p and click the 3rd box of the 3 beside that to go full screen

That's why I am doing it - (and yes I did stick to the limit) :D I intend to rig up a more stable camera holder and get some more footage - the idea being I want to cover as much of the area as possible including the places (such as estates) that most people would not cover.

Very good Brian, it looks so different, just at the particular angle that the camera was pointed at. I see you just got the one wave at the top part of Newry Street, outside the First and Last, I think you picked a great day... Thanks for sharing..

Hi Brian, Except for all the automobles the scenes of my youth have not changed much. Great piece of work.

Yes Ged, I angled it slightly to the left to get more of the view from a passengers perspective - that and if I moved it to the right it would have picked up the mount :rotfl: Obviously I could not put the mount on the drivers side (impaired vision - points on license!) I might try a centre mount adaptation (elastic bands) :rotfl: or maybe even try a better camera - mind you for a mobile phone I was quite surprised at the results :D

And yes Kevin, I expected a car at that corner as well - usually is at least 2 or 3 of them when you go round there :D

Thanks George, and that was light traffic

Brilliant Brian, Thank you very much for that.

I saw a similar recording a long time ago (at a special seance in ST Bronagh's hall in the late 70s). It was taken in the 1960s, going along the same road. You could see the Roxboro hotel among other things. I wonder is that footage still around.

Anyway Thanks again, love BrianStreetView :-)

Great stuff. Was in Rostrevor and WP last year & this really brought it back. Some phone you've got - hope it's insured . . .

Thanks all, the phone is a HTC Sensation - It's a smartphone, almost like a mini laptop http://www.htc.com/uk/smartphones/htc-sensation/?PS=1 and I must say I am very impressed - It's only drawback is battery life but that's something all of these things suffer from. And yes its insured but it is also in a quick release clamp in the car so it never stays there (not even for a second if I'm getting out!)

I went out again on Monday afternoon but while I had repositioned the mount to reduce vibration, I forgot to set the white balance and the resulting video was too dark. But then again I'm not a professional, and it is after all only a phone (I leave the pro camera stuff to Garbhan) :D

I'll do some more once the weather improves, and if anybody else has similar footage feel free to post it.
