If you take digital photographs and want to fine-tune or enhance them you may be interested to know that the Google Nik Collection software, previously costing $150) was made available for free download by Google late last month (see http://petapixel.com/2016/03/24/googles-150-nik-collection-photo-editing-software-now-100-free/). The software is available both for Microsoft Windows and for Apple MacIntosh computers.

If you already have Adobe Photoshop or Lightroom, the Nik install program gives you the option of installing it as a set of Plugins, otherwise it installs normally as a program group with icons for each application.

The Nik Collection provides "7 desktop plug-ins that provide a wide range of photo editing features, including mimicking the look of old cameras and films, retouching and correcting photos, darkroom retouching, adjusting color and tonality, HDR, image sharpening, and noise reduction.", however in summary it allows you to load a photograph, then click on one of a number of pre-configured settings, called Presets, and instantly see the results. You can then continue fine tuning the image until you are happy with it and then save it. If you further adjusted the Preset and want to use it again you can save it as a Custom Preset and it will be available the next time you open the software.

NB I suggest you run this software against copies of your photographs, otherwise once you make changes and save them the original file will be changed permanently.

In a related move, a set of instructional videos on the software (view online or download - previously $120) has also been made available for free (see http://petapixel.com/2016/04/01/full-suite-nik-collection-tutorials-now-available-free/). Note that to do so you have to provide an email address, which may put you on a mailing list, however you can subsequently login to the site and remove yourself from it.
