As previously stated.

So many cars park unneccesarily in the square from as early as 6.15 when I get my bus and they are there all day taking up spaces which could be used by shoppers or by the amusements if that were possible. Even more so the amount of cars that park at 6.40 as well and 7.10. Just purely selfish to be honest.

That's what I was thinking.
Where are all those cars going
to park?

Hmmm. Strange one that. If you travel in from Burren or wherever, attempting to be a good citizen and avoid taking your car to Belfast (as we are now all being asked to do by those currently absent at Stormont), and you wish to commute by bus, where are you supposed to leave your car if there are no public services that can get you to the Belfast bus at the right time?

Just a hypothetical question as I am in the unenviable position of having a workplace car parking space in Newry and don't commute by bus. Even if I did though, the bus stop is just at the bottom of my road...

There will always be those who believe that the car park is not for all day parking and those who will think that as public spaces they are pretty much open to anyone for any length of time.

***grabs the popcorn and waits...***

I wonder how many of drivers of the cars are using the Square as a "Park and Share " facility.
Is there not sufficient lands close to the roundabout that could be reclaimed and used as a designated Park and Share. This would then free up the square for shoppers, tourists etc.

This really is a photo of the square and not a debate on parking (or lack of) and is off topic so I will be editing and moving it into another section as there are plenty of groups on facebook having hissy fits about it without it travelling over here :rotfl: but until I do that (read remember how to) I'll answer a few questions - What's wrong with the car park in Newry street? In a few cases it would be even closer to the bus stop than some of the square spaces. I would have thought that was better for those god forbid who can afford a car but not an umbrella that would help them walk the 3 or 4 minutes it would take from the carparks on Havelock place when it rains..... I am aware that the public transport is woeful but that is a debate for somewhere else.

Anyway, as I have mentioned when (not if) the time restricted parking comes in all of this becomes irrelevant and anyone using the car park as a short stay will have to find somewhere else (hint, why not do it now and get yourself used to it) ;) And I am also sure the historians in 100 years will be having a right laugh at the goings on over on facebook (at least here we can have a civilized debate about it)

And lastly, there is a covenant in place on the square (The late Roger Hall himself told me that) the exact wording escapes me but more or less that the square was built for the townspeople and belongs to them.

I sold my car and have never been happier.I use the Rooney Bus to Belfast at £40 per 10 Journeys at 6.15 every morning which I think is reasonable. I pay no car tax. i pay no insurance and I dont have to have two services a year at a fortune in the garage and I get a wee sleep on the bus! what is there not to like. :-):-)
