The Park 2018

#1 Post by Brian » Thu Feb 08, 2018 5:09 pm

As you know (or if you don't you do now) the Municipal park is undergoing renovations funded by the National Lottery Heritage fund. Further info (plans etc) will be posted here as soon as I get them and I am also going to be posting photographs as the work progresses from time to time (I have been granted permission from the council and site managers as well as the Whistledown hotel to access the site and take pictures)

To start with just a couple of snaps from outside showing some of the damaged tree's being removed. (they will all be replaced and a heritage garden specialist is overseeing the replanting etc)

Press Release 22nd January 2018

Warrenpoint Municipal Park has now closed prior to the commencement of restoration work to restore and upgrade facilities.
Newry, Mourne and Down District Council successfully received funding of £850,000 from the Heritage Lottery Fund’s Parks for People Programme towards the project. With the recent appointment of the Main Contractor Quinn Automatic Ltd, the proposed project of restoration and regeneration will commence within the next couple of weeks with completion in summer 2018.

Newry, Mourne and Down District Council Chairperson, Councillor Roisin Mulgrew said, “I am delighted that Newry, Mourne and Down District Council can now begin works in the historic Warrenpoint Municipal Park. It is listed on the Register of Parks and Gardens of Special Historic Interest Northern Ireland and this important restoration project will preserve the heritage of this beautiful park for future generations to enjoy.”

The project will safeguard the park’s many historic features: the listed bandstand, which is one of the finest remaining examples in Northern Ireland, will be carefully restored; the Pavilion Building, which dates from the 1930s, will be reestablished as an Interpretive Centre; the original planting will be reinstated and pathways will be resurfaced. A new coherent range of street furniture will also be installed as part of the works to include lighting, seats, bins, a park shelter, park notices and signage.

Cllr Mulgrew continued, “The children’s play area will be upgraded with the installation of new play equipment and play surfaces and the tennis courts will be upgraded to an informal games area with specialist surfacing for tennis and other games. An associated development programme of activities and events for the community and visitors will also form part of the project, providing opportunities for users to engage with the heritage of the park.”

Anna Carragher, Chair of Heritage Lottery Fund Northern Ireland added, “This is such a special Park which has been used and loved by the local community for generations. We are delighted to be involved in breathing new life into the Park’s historic features, providing new and improved facilities and opportunities for everyone to learn more about its unique history.”

Children from St Dallans were given the opportunity to share their ideas for the future of their local park.
Shirley Keenan (Newry, Mourne & Down District Council) visited our school today and met with a group of children to brainstorm and share ideas about what they would like to see in their local park. The children were first to see the council's plans and drawings as to what the newly improved park might look like.

The children loved sharing their input during this consultation session and Shirley was certainly impressed by some future 'Town Planners'.

For those interested, the submitted (passed) plans from 2015 are available here:

http://epicpublic.planningni.gov.uk/pub ... NM8SV30000

For the less technically minded, the overall site plan and bandstand plans can be viewed from these links - there have been a few minor changes since then after consultations with heritage architects and horticulturists.

Hey Brian, maybe the St. Dallan kids could give those "working" on the Bridge project a little help. Looks like they could use it.

Glad to see the park work is underway. Well done!

As I mentioned I have permission to enter the site and take photos as the work progresses. This will be on a weekly basis and supplemented by some photos taken by staff from the roof of the Whistledown hotel (the first 4 in this post)

A few hours with a metal detector might turn up some old coins.

I wonder if the 'wee castle' in the flower beds was saved or will it be on the never-seen-again list too?

Great photos. My dad used to re-paint the bandstand about every three years and also the railings around the park between 1980 and 2001.

Great to see these, Brian.

I almost got trapped in the park on my way to work - must have been on the day the official photo was being taken! I spotted the gate was open and decided to take a short cut to work. It was only when someone shouted out to me that the park was closed that I realised. I must pay more attention to what is going on around me!

Work continues - estimated completion date is looking like August, the bandstand is getting a complete new roof and paint scheme chosen from paint samples uncovered by heritage experts, and the glass doors are being reinstated, groundwork wise drainage channels have been added and power cables placed underground for the new lighting and the new edgings and paving work has started. Work will start soon on the new children's play area and multi use games court (tennis etc) pavilion (interpretive centre) and park keepers hut.

Brian - a lot of work being done there.
The edging looks nice along the pathways.
It will be lovely whenever it is finished.
