My sister in law lives in Omeath. Just moved home with her Japanese husband (he can't get a visa to work in the UK - despite the Brexit scaremongering about foreigners taking all the jobs in the UK) and so they moved there. PITA getting from W'Point over to Omeath when you can see it less than half a mile away!

Will the new ferry encourage me to go that way instead of via Newry? I'll try it once, but I'd suspect it will take far longer. 25 minutes drive to Greencastle, Dear knows how long until you're at the other side (half an hour, if you've just missed it?) Then 15 minutes to Omeath. Hmmm... 25-30 minutes via Newry depending on traffic.

Roll on the bridge.

I would rather ferry than road, More interesting. I assume foot passengers are ok to go too.

Well I think that will put the cat among the pigeons regarding the new bridge at narrow water, I would like to get some feed back on this subject.I am concerned the whole concept of the new bridge will be thrown out.

Can't see it Maurice - All are completely separate projects. I suppose if you wanted to make some sort of scenario out of it, If all goes well with the bridge tourists (and indeed locals) could then avail of a "round the lough" tour by bike or car (I assume busses won't be on the ferry?) crossing on one and returning on the other. Time will tell.

We were down that way at the weekend and called over to take a look. We both thought - who the hell will ever want to use this? I can't see them generating a return on £8.5million on this route, especially as it's for cars only. The only people I can see using it are Kilkeel folks going to Dublin.

Plus the infrastructure is really poor in the Greencastle area with narrow, twisty roads. We got stuck behind a car doing 22mph from the turn off to Cranfield the whole way to the Greencastle turn. Plus the road widening that has taken place in the area of the ferry terminal is of poor quality and isn't wide enough IMO.

I'd imagine a few folks will try it once for the novelty; in fact I'd be surprised if it lasts a year. I'd love to see the economic appraisal that was carried out on behalf of the entrepreneur behind this!

Hard to disagree, Connor.

The local objection was mainly that the existing
roads were never designed to accommodate the
expected increase in traffic.

As for making a profit....I have used the ferry
services run by MacBraynes to the Scottish
Islands, which have been in operation for many
years.....heavily subsidised by the Scottish
Government.

The Strangford Ferry is also loss making and
subsidised by the N.I.Goverment.

Any application to Stormont for a subsidy for
the proposed service is likely to find its way,
rapidly, to the nearest shredder.

However, I do hope they keep their head above
water.

The Ferry System in B.C. is part of the highway System and is subsidized by local, Provincial and Federal funding.
