Photo courtesy of boxer 1949 Belfast Forum.

The story behind this is a Man and a Woman, of differing religions, wanted to be buried together.
Their Relatives insisted they be buried in their respective Graveyards, so they buried them next
to the wall, and built these Headstones.

This photo was passed to me by a friend,
I had no idea of the location.

Being something of a Romantic, I was
looking at it from that angle, but there
is also a certain symbolic element as well.

Bingo, Dragonfly. You are right!
GGG you were right too about the "Why".

In the Protestant part of this cemetery, J.W.C van Gorcum, colonel of the Dutch Cavalry and militia commissioner in Limburg, is buried. His wife, lady J.C.P.H van Aefferden, is buried in the Catholic part. They were married in 1842, the lady was 22 and the colonel was 33, but he was a protestant and didn't belong to the nobility.
This caused quite a commotion in Roermond. After being married for 38 years, the colonel died in 1880 and was buried in the protestant part of the cemetery against the wall. His wife died in 1888 and had decided not to be buried in the family tomb but on the other side of the wall, which was the closest she could get to her husband. Two clasped hands connect the graves across the wall. (Source) http://www.oddee.com/item_98582.aspx

And Tony, yep. A certain romantic and symbolic element too.

Thanks for adding that piece of
information to the original post.
That was a nice way to solve the
problem.

Most interesting StLouisGuy................maybe we should start a thread on Headstones with a Difference! Isn't there one in Co. Monaghan somewhere that's inscribed 'Here lies the body of .. ...can't remember the name....who died once, but was buried twice?!' I seem to remember the old reporter guy, Charles Witherspoon, doing a BBC programme about it years ago. Wealthy lady, buried wearing a valuable ring, grave robbers come, couldn't get it off her hand, tried to cut off her finger and she screamed etc. Maybe I should've Googled it first......but I'll leave that to somebody else! :-C ;)

Fascinating stuff. I seem to remember when we lived in Surrey an English friend told us that someone was buried upside down on nearby Box Hill for some reason.

The same friend arrived here on a visit some years ago, took one look at the Mournes and said,"ah, now I see why you were not impressed by Box Hill!" :getmecoat:

appropriate.
