Dad came across this poem today but he doesn't know who wrote it. Apologies if it has been posted before.

'On The Beat'

Siren sounding in the night,
Soon the bell and flashing lights,
Will be out upon the street,
Warrenpoint lads are 'On The Beat'.

It's just touching midnight and all are in bed.
A good time for resting and sleeping 'tis said.
But suddenly the silence is shattered by noise,
The siren once more is calling the boys.

Peter Rice down the road leaps out of his dream,
And hops on his bike, in a flash, it would seem.
To be first at the station for once would be nice,
"If I pedal real hard I'll be there in a thrice".

Coming up the road like the hammers of hell,
He sees the Warburtons are going as well.
'Joe 90' is going well with youth on his side,
But Maurice and Peter are trusted and tried.

The first on the scene is the man with the news,
It seems marriage hasn't altered Malachy's views.
He's then joined by the McKinley's, first Derek then Billy,
Arguing again. It's really so silly.

The Tates are both there, first Sam in his car.
For Bob the run from the factory's too far.
Kevin Dinsmore has come on his jet propelled bike.
There's no sign of Fitzpatrick, maybe he'll hike.

Someone else coming, now I really can't say,
Wait, yes, as I thought - it is Stephen McVeigh.
From Clermont too we get Fintan and Petey,
Not overweight, but just a little bit meaty.

We're all set to go, but now - wait a sec,
We've forgotten McCabe, we'll have to go back.
He's away with the taxi, no matter no harm,
We're lucky that this is a false alarm.

Dad thinks Peter Fitzsimmons may have written this verse but he's not sure. Maybe someone on the Forum could confirm the identity of this very vigilant poet! ~x(

Just reading that there to my dad, Billy and he thinks it was Barney Gribben who penned that lovely poem. He had a real chuckle there at hearing it. Thanks for posting Lorraine... :-):-)

The mystery is solved :D

John Allen (Area Commander Southern Area Command) gave me another copy of this and he was given it by Peter Fitzsimmons himself, and it was dated 1969/70
