This was taken from upstairs in St. Joseph's. The date would be about 1990.

Just noticed the Alexian Brothers site was still intact back then. Looks like it was a nice tranquil place that day..the way I like it !

And fresh sand on the beach in anticipation of a good summer-now there's optimism!

Driving down Queen Street toward the Baths one observes an ugly edifice blocking a beautiful view of Carlingford Lough. What is needed is a state of the art facility, not at this location, but some designated area large enough to have a complete sports facility, with ample parking and recreation necessities. It's a fantasy - great projects begin with an idea.

Regards, George Williamson.

Over the years we have had many 'ideas' proposed by the local council. I can remember reading articles back about 1984 about the proposed re-development for the entire promenade out as far as Dobbin's Point....all sorts of wonderful things were to happen in terms of leisure facilites along the promenade, not to mention a later proposal to have a major water based leisure facility on the former Alexian Brothers site. That is now planned for Newry although even that development has hit some problems and looks as if it will be cut back. Looks like the only thing our local council is good at organising are the feasibility studies....not so much getting results.......ask the developers interested in the Albert Basin site about that !
