Bend of the River another one you me and the lads watched in the Foy..think Arthur Kennedy featured as well..... Winchester 73 superb...look out for Rock Hudson rather curiously cast in a small role as a Cheyenne [Young Bull?]..Fourthroad there is an old black and white western showing from time to time on a saturday afternoon on one of the movie channels..magnificent piece of work, called The Gunfighter stars Gregory Peck as Jimmy Ringo and a superb "baddie" called Hunt Bromley..watch out for it... just thinking your old fav Alan Hale jnr [Casey Jones] makes a brief appearence as well..... a rainy staurday afternoon, the house to yourself and a westeern on the box..what's better than that. ;)

Add a tub of ice cream or a box of milk tray, I hear this is gonna be a big year for westerns, with a few re-makes in the hopper, a couple of serious, and the rest to be hollywood skewed, special effects et al. How fast can they make the draw, perhaps they can draw from home, like the dole, who ever drew faster than Kid Curry, Now ya see it, now ya don't.(in reverse) Give me Yul Brynner, "clap your hands", done this many times, even successfully, and it feels sooo good.
Bogged down with rain and mud here, but hope to be back in the saddle soon, the sun is out again.

Murphy funny you should mention Kid Curry, they are doing reruns of Alias Smith and Jones back home at the minute [pure comfort food]..makes lunch hour go even quicker and is a welcome distraction from all the horrors and disagreements continually reported on the News at One.
Absolutely delighted to hear that Hollywood or at least a section of same will concentrate on Westerns over the next while..a long neglected medium..how was the mini series Comanche Moon received stateside [based on the McMurtry book of the same name and part of the Lonesome Dove series..believe Wes Studi plays Buffalo Hump so worth watching for this alone]..I read some time back that Tommy Lee Jones [part native american himself, Cherokee I believe] was hoping to do a remake of "The Searcher's" but nothing seems to have happend, perhaps he feels satisfied that he explored similar ground in "The Missing".. maybe not news to you all but Jones who won a scholarship to Harvard roomed with former Presidential nominee Al Gore when in attendance there.[ TLJ played football for Harvard and his athleticism was very much in evidence when he alighted from his Kiowa mare and kicked the bejasus out of the Scout he encountered in Miles City in Lonesome Dove... "I hate rude behaviour in a man .. won't tolerate it"]..watch out in 2010 for another movie adaption of a McMurtry book "Boone's Lick" Tom Hanks and Julianne Moore apparently signed up for the lead roles.
Murphy I see California is blighted with another natural disaster, this time not wind rain or fire but mud .. at least you have plenty of horses to pull you out of the ditch should same be required.
Your mention of Chris [Yul Brynner] reminds me that only Robert Vaughan survives from "The Magnificent Seven"...on the day that Charles Bronson past on I got a mail from an American friend who said "Charles Bronson the only guy tough enough to be a member of the Magnificent Seven and The Dirty Dozen"..now that's tough!

Jones's Hill - I'm enjoying reading the
posts on this topic.
I'm not a big cowboy fan now, but
probably saw my share growing up.
I knew about Tommy Lee Jones, and
he is such a good actor.
The Bob Hope thing - he could have
stayed home and enjoyed spending
Christmas there, but he decided to
entertain the troops instead.
Good for him for bringing some joy
to the troops.

Time to move on from Bob, folks. Not arguement, just a bit of insight. Watch for my 'expose' on the shananigans of the Tooth Fairy and his accompaice, the Easter Bunny.

Murphy no I am not having it..you have never forgiven the Easter Bunny and the Tooth Fairy for riding off and leaving you after that Boulder City Bank job went askew .. probably down to CD and Fourthroad losing their nerve when the time lock on the safe did not work..think Crazy Lee in The Wild Bunch!..last I heard of EB and TF they where carving out a meagre existence as Animal Feed Supplement suppliers in the Duluth area...
Thanks for your nice comments Xpaddy, glad you enjoy the thread..I am so in love with the Western genre that I even watch the Trooping of the colour at Buckingham Palace simply because of the amount of horses on view!`
cheers

Joneshill is indeed like many of us here in love with the western genre, Murphy is so lucky he gets to play the cowboy. I did spot joneshill yesterday in Rostrevor along with another cowboy looking for some horses to come down the main street

Winchester 73? Fourthroad, I have three of them and am on the hunt for a Winchester Golden Boy 45 cal. as named by the Indians around the time Custer departed.
Visited the Winchester mystery house a few times, JH could probably tell you all about that, but it housed the finest collection of Winchester firearms. Alladin's cave with bullets.
A bunch of Colt 45s, and my pride and joy are a brace of 1840 black powder army colts,(with sequential serial numbers) silver plated, as used by Wild Bill Hickok, he used to reload 5 times a day to be sure he had dry powder at all times. Just got the full set of Deadwood, hooked all over again.

Murphy is spot on with Deadwood Fourthroad .. get yourself down to HMV?, the one opposite Waterstones, think the Box sets have been reduced..truly magnificent piece of work..originally I was sceptical when I heard Ian McShane was involved but he is magnificent as are Power's Boothe,Keith Carridine and many other's..it's a HBO production and done the way only the Americans can do these things. Writer David Milch other credits include NYPD Blue and a short lived series which I loved called Brooklyn South. Murphy sure you have seen the Jeff Bridges Wild Bill movie if not check it out..directed by Walter Hill [Long Rider's]

will have to go buy that one with Jeff Bridges, forgot all about it, keep posting them titles, so i can remember. my old pal james Whitmore jr was in long Riders, maybe I mentioned that before, CD will remind me if I did.
So what an excellent job 'Lovejoy" did in Deadwood, Toured the Melody Ranch a few times, where they shot the series, My buddy Howard Long has a recurring role at the opening, the hand that grabs the chicken by the legs belongs to Howard, forever christened by me "Howard the Hand" He was a wrangler for the horses on the set, and was the only one who would grab the chicken for the director.

I guess there were a lot more chickens on the set, all dressed up as tough miners. That's Hollywood for ya.

CD please tell me it is not your intention to introduce HCTC and or indeed Sean O Rourke to the Cowboy Palace or indeed any such similar establishment when next they arrive on your doorstep [like Chevy Chase in the Griswalds family vacation]..you and I know both know a good night for both lads involves two conservative measure's of a Polynesian style rum infused cola and the entire back catalogue of the Barron Knight's! :> :cheers2:

JH, I can't speak for my good Cousin Sean O'Rourke, heroic firefighter and expert mail deliver'er, but for my wee red headed cousin I can say that the Cowboy Palace is like Romper Room compared to some of the establishments that young feller crawled in and out of south of the border in Rosarito Beach, Baja, Mexico.
Let's just say Fire-eater Mac did the 'Point proud and I'm sure if Toby Kieth had been looking for hero's to put in his video the red headed HCTC would have been his first choice. The Bada-Bing and the Camino's Quatros will never be the same after that man left his stamp.
On another note, and not to be bringing Leslie Townes Hope back into the discussion (he bores me as much today as he did when he was alive), I have a stake in a Limo service in the Palm Springs area, one of our customer's was the 'boul Bob, whenever his secretary called for a pick-up, the driver's all turned and walked away, this man who was worth so much was so tight with money, whenever he walked his ass squeaked, as in most service business' the drivers depend on tips, 2 bucks if they were lucky for a 6 hour gig, average back then was about 20 - 30 bucks, plus he was'nt the most pleasant customer to have in the back of the car, anyway, back to more important issues like Kid Curry and Hannibal Heyes, I mentioned a while back that I did pick up the complete 12 DVD set of the Kansas Cousins AKA Smith and Jones, Ben Murphy could draw a fast pistol thats for sure, have to admit the storylines seemed so much better back in 70's, but seeing that man do his fast draw makes up for that.
And by the way Murphy, yes, you did mention about your pal being in Long Riders and yes, you will enjoy Jeff Bridges in Wild Bill and if you get the chance go see Crazy Heart, me thinks Jeff will get an oscar for playing washed up country western singer Bad Blake, well worth the admission fee they charge these days Yimmy.

Yeraldo,
I get the senior discount to the flicks, have done for years, much to the chagrin of my wife.
And where's my border patrol picture? And who let the dogs out?, and why do women take thier children to the supermarket to beat them? And what did CURED HAM have before it was cured?
And on and on------------------

CD again not to continue with Bob Aitch as by now quite apparent our resident Californian's had no time for same..but must interject and say not unusual for legendary comedians to display tight fistedness..fiscal prudence etc..Milton Berle,Jackie Gleason,George Burn's and Groucho Marx for example,.oft times this was a result of their impoverished backgrounds..you and I both recall how big Tone Morgan regally entertained us [caw caw/collapsing at work etc etc] but he was never at his most humorous when having to break a twenty!.. a close personal friend of yours and mine Mickey Rooney I am sure you will agree is the most superb company with witty rejoinder's aplenty, however the smile is soon replaced with a frown should the former Charlotte Street man have to dip into his bill folder and unearth a white tenner..only last night I encountered big Mike in Rostrevor as he makes final preparation for a three week jaunt to the far east [Singapore/Phuket etc].. never have I seen a man more angst ridden at the prospect of his next credit card statement....

cheers

" We don't rent pig's"!] on the trail that "half breed Comanchero butcher" Blue Duck .. now for a bonus Charlotte St if you can tell me who Blue Duck was I will eat one of CD's Sombrero's [and I believe he has an extensiive collection of same .. during the summer his cuz the most affable HCTC adorned in a particularly fetching one[ blue and silver Charro variety] delivers the post in some of our more select post codes]... no help from the west coast re Blue Duck please!
