Kerr's Ice Cream?

#1 Post by Richiemac » Thu Jul 07, 2016 6:19 pm

I have been asked by a Mr Kerr from Lisburn to find out if anyone recalls an ice cream shop in Warrenpoint ran by Kerr?

He remembers as a child coming to Warrenpoint on the train and getting ice cream somewhere where Fegan's First and Last is now. He was told that it was a relative of his that owned it.

He was curious to find out if he had any relatives still in the area.

Any help would be appreciated. :)]

I think there may have been a fish & chip shop close to Fegans which also sold ice cream.
I also think they used to have a large tricycle with a cool fridge on the front of it and a favourite vending spot was outside the baths.
The name of the owner was perhaps called "Burns"
Perhaps there may be other people who can verify this.

Steve Burns had a fish and chip shop beside Fegans, his wife's maiden name was Kerr. Their daughter
Maria still lives in the town.

Thr ice cream tricycle was owned and operated by Jimmy Burns who lived in Newry Street at that time.

Please remember Jimmy Byrne and Jimmy Burns. Jimmy BYRNE had shop and garage at the bottom of Newry St. Jimmy BURNS lived at number 15. He bought the ice cream bikes from his Uncle Stevie as far as i can remember. I worked for Jimmy many a Sunday in the square and over from the Bal.

That's if they would know what it

Good to see that we have got the Burns and the Byrnes sorted out.
One thing for certain it was neither Charlie or his brother Billy (local barbers)on the other side of the Square who were the ice cream vendors !!!!!!!!

Jimmy Burns did live at number 15 Newry Street where my brother Peter and family now live.
I believe Jimmy married Maria. She was a great pianist and when I was taking piano lessons with Aveen Kinney (Tohill) quite a few years ago, Maria was also a pupil and she was preparing for her piano teacher's exam. Maria lived in one of the little houses near to where McAllisters lived on Newry Street.
