What event occassioned Chegger's to walk amongst us?..whatever it was I am sure HCTC and Thomas Hanna where in attendence..when I lived in Lodgeview Terrace some years back HCTC with an unconcealed glee used to deliver my quarterly demands whilst whistling the theme tune to "Chegger's Play's pop"...quite a few years ago I was given complimentary ticket's to the final night of the local festival [in the Dome] not my type of thing to be perfectly honest, thus Duke Street quickly assessing he could secure same with no financial outlay practically ripped them from my hand, before I had the chance to turn even a miniscule profit ..[deep down despite my humble origin I have always craved the office of unrepentent Capitalist..think Bradley Hardacre]..my work colleague at the time Tony Morgan attended the event and he recalled that the only one who danced more than he did that night was the late great Derek Dougan.

Cheggers was booked in to play the Osborne Hotel - on the same night there was a disco in the town hall for the younger ones (the promoter organised it that cheggers would make a brief visit as mentioned in this thread http://www.oldwarrenpointforum.com/phpBB3/viewtopic.php?f=5&t=435 ) That was the time we had arranged a full roadshow consisting of our own equipment plus lights borrowed from Frank McClorey, Donald Moore, Simon Carey and Colm Walker - resulting in the town hall stage being covered from side to side with light boxes (something never seen before or since I may add)

True to his word Keith "Cheggers" Chegwin arrived into the town hall to be mobbed by some local kids - there was not that many in at this stage, as even in those days it was not fashionable to turn up early however cheggers was most impressed with the lights and even autographed one of my records (That I shall now attempt to find and photograph) :D

The Walkers Brother were at the Osbourne in 1967, Murphy must have rememered that occassion.
Joe Frazier the World Heavyweight Champion also appeared at the Osbourne about 1971 in a Cabaret Show.
I think The Grapefruit who were prodigies of the Beatles appeared at the Osbourne about 1969?
Also I think Helen Shapiro sang at the Aylesford House in the early 1990's?
Edwin Heath the great hypnotist appeared at the Bay Shore and The Osbourne on a number of occassions.
  :dance3: :dance3:

xpaddy - Billy Fury & Alma Cogan were on the same bill in the Town Hall.
Can't remember exact year, but think it was late 50s early 60s
Kenny Ball was at the Osborne & one of the Hourican boys got to
play alongside Kenny.

For the life of me I can't recall his name, ~x( but I am sure someone
will know as he played in a Jazz Band & lived at one time in Clermont
Gardens. @=)

Mags - thanks for that info.
I remember Alma Cogan appearing at
the Town Hall, surprised I didn't go and
see them.
I told this story before, when she appeared
in concert in Warrenpoint, she stayed at
the Ballyedmond.
I worked beside Manya Callaghan whose parents
owned the Ballyedmond.
Manya asked Alma if she could see her dresses
(remember those beautiful cocktail dresses),
and Manya said they were just covered in
make-up.
Remember she wore a lot of it.

X-paddy, had Manya Callaghan a brother named John Callaghan? I think John was a chef, was there two younger brothers named Ricky and John?
Where did Manya ever go to?

xpaddy - Yes Alma did wear a lot of makeup both on & off stage!
I was told that when she appeared with Billy Fury she complained
about not being listed first on the poster. That honour went to Billy
Fury of course.
To be honest the majority of the audience were there to see Billy Furry.
I, along with quite a few other girls went to the back door & got his autograph!!

Dukestreet - Manya had a brother named
Robert.
I think there was just the two of them.
Manya and her husband emigrated.
New Zealand comes to mind but not
100% sure.

Mags - lucky you getting his autograph.
Alma Cogan was good, but Billy Fury was
every young girl's dream. :lazy:
