I'd imagine the residents of Newry Street and Charlotte Street would have suffered from big black clouds of coal dust flying about on a windy day! We lived just behind Fishers yard in Newry (where The Quays is now) and every time we went down the back garden to play we came back as black as a boot!

Poor mother could hardly put a wash out without it getting destroyed.

Great photos - hardly a container in sight compared to these days.

Don't think I would have liked
to have lived near a coal yard.
Remember on my way to work
I would order the slack for my
Mother, from Kellys.
If the order was in before 9, there
was a good chance of same day
delivery.
Which was a God send sometimes.

I remember in the 60's the coal lorries spilling their loads while turning the corner at the Ulster Bar.We used to go out with buckets and brush it up.Every Little Helped.

Gerry, do you remember Francie? Don't know his last name, but he would give you a piece of coal, for luck?
