These photos take me back, got my first car
that year.

The Square as I remember it then, you could
drive across it from any direction.

Great pics.

Bernie these are great photos.
I rode a bicycle then to work and
back, and I remember as well just
cutting across the Square to get to
Newry St.
It was no problem then.

The Square was totally clear those days, now its chocker block with traffic moving and parking in every direction..
Why dont they make an exit onto Newry St at the First and Last.

The Square looks huge compared to today. With all the kerbs and road furniture installed it really has shrunk the size down and makes it less suitable for any activities apart from parking.

When the festival was on, I was thinking that if this was any other country in Europe, the bars and cafes would have tables out in The Square and would be offering waiter service. However, I suppose our Health and Safety Police would never allow anything like that. Oh no.

Is The Square going to be reworked during the new public realm works? It would be great if it was a flat surface once again with the parking spaces marked out by different coloured materials, or just painted on. Then it could be used for other things as well.

The public realm has been ongoing for years, and despite the best representations from many locals at the various meetings held over the years this is what we are getting:

More of the same basically.

With the myriad of people, operating under
the banners of Town Planning and Traffic
Management, all with imposing Job Titles,
one would assume they could get it right.

The Town is famous for it's Pantomime, I
would suggest that a Sunday afternoon at
the Bank corner is something akin to a
Pantomime as well.

The entrance to Parking should be moved
from the Genoa area, and an exit created
at the First & Last to allow traffic to leave
the Town without joining the bottleneck at
the Bank corner.

More of the same indeed. I don't know about the rest of you, but the flag paving isn't great in my opinion. I find it slippy when its wet. Also, around by O'Hare's Bakery they're all wobbly and loose.

However, it's still not as bad as Newry; there they placed telephone boxes right in the middle of the pavements and bollards everywhere. You couldn't push a double buggy around safely. Mind you, I don't have a double buggy, but you get the picture.
