Warrenpoint Utd. Presentation Dance 1950

#1 Post by dukestreet » Wed Mar 11, 2009 10:09 pm

There was a large assembly in The Alexandra Hotel, Warrenpoint, on Saturday evening at a supper and dance promoted by Warrenpoint United Football Club, when players who had assisted the Club during year 1949 in The Mourne and District Summer League and other competitions, were entertained.
Mr. Benito Malocca, Club Chairman, presided.
Mr. Louie Rodgers (President), who welcomed the players, spoke of the great successes of the club in 1949. In that year they had won The Mourne and District Summer Football League, and the Outlook and Cosmopolitan Cups – a remarkable performance. In winning those three trophies they had only called upon sixteen players. The committee of the club felt proud of the team, and the sportsmanship of the payers concerned. They were a great credit to the town.
Their team had only suffered one defeat in almost twelve months of football. It gave him great pleasure to propose the toast, “Warrenpoint United Football Club.”
Mr. Vincent Gilmore, team captain, replying, said 1949 was a record season for the Club and one of which they were all proud. The players were under a heavy debt for the interest taken in their welfare.
Mr. Francis Craven, Newry, on behalf of Ballybot Club, congratulated Warrenpoint United on its success in 1949, and wished the club prosperity in 1950.
Mr. Michael Boyle, club Treasurer proposed the toast of “The Press.”
Mr. Sam Wilson suitably replied.
The trophies were then gracefully presented by the wife of the president of the Club, Mrs. Rodgers, who handed over a miniature shield and two medals to each of the following players:--

Vincent Gilmore, (Capt.)
Patrick Finnison,
Bertie Law,
Bernard Sheeky,
Richard Greer,
Matthew Doran,
William Peers,
Gerard Hughes,
Florence Gilmore,
Denis Gallagher,
Hugh Gaw.

Edward McNeill, goalkeeper (who is at present on an extended trial with Tottenham Hotspur),
Joseph O’Boyle (who is a teacher in England),
John O’Hare (working in Dublin),
Bruce Sheills (who is at college in Dublin),
and Kenny Heaton, Rostrevor.
The last five players were unable to be present, and their awards will be handed over later.
On the motion of Mr. Gerard Hughes, a hearty vote of thanks was passed to Mrs. Rodgers.
For the dancing, the music was acceptably supplied by McCabe’s Blue Rhythm Band.
The following form the management Committee of the club:--
Merrs. Louis Rodgers; Benito Malocca; Gerard Hughes, (vice-president); Vincent Gilmore, (secretary); Michael Boyle (treasurer); Anthony Gallagher; Gerard Durkin and Henry Peers.
Of the 16 players who assisted the Club in 1949, five are now in senior or intermediate football – Edward McNeill is with Tottenham; Vincent Gilmore and Bruce Shiells play for Portadown F.C.; and Richard Greer and Matthew Doran are on the books of Newry Town F.C. :first:

How fantastic to see this report of the meeting about Warrenpoint United Football Club. My father used to regale the family with stories about the team. He was so proud of them all and what they had achieved. He loved to tell the story about their games against the Army team stationed an Bally Mckinler camp during the war. The Army team included some England internationals and had been unbeaten. The drew with the Army 1-1 at the camp and beat them 2-1 at home, they were the only team in the league do pull this off. How wonderful to see all the names of the team that played so well. Happy Days!
