McIlroy the Butcher Charlotte Street

#1 Post by Denise McGeown » Sun Jul 14, 2013 12:00 pm

Hi, has anyone any photographs of a butcher called McIlroy who owned a shop in Charlotte Street ? Also there was a provisions and toy shop in or around where the Post Office stands today in the Square, who owned it or would there be a photograph of it on the site. Thanks in anticipation, family research project under way !

McIlroys never worked in the shop .. They had a shop in Newry. My Aunt worked for years in that shop and I did holiday relief for her at times.

Hi, it's for my grandmother. She was talking about a lovely man who worked in it forty years ago, she said he had jet black hair and quite quiet. She had been in the shop and had dropped her purse on the way out, there was a considerable amount of money in it which was to be lodged in the bank. When she arrived at the bank she discovered she had lost the purse and in panic rushed out of the bank and straight into the butcher who had come after her to return it. An act of kindness she never forgot.
