Ulster Hotel owner Tom Sturgeon

#1 Post by Cargycroy » Fri Jan 17, 2014 5:41 pm

It seems a guy called Tom Sturgeon and his English wife Clara ran the Ulster Hotel in Warrenpoint around 1905 - 1911 (or perhaps later). According to the 1911 census Sturgeon was 57 years of age. I am curious to know if this is the same Sturgeon as lived in Milltown, Burren. A Tom Sturgeon of Milltown, Burren described as a 'retired farmer' died in 1942.

I was also wondering if any of the local members know if there are any Sturgeons buried in Clonallon Church of Ireland graveyard.

Thanking you all in anticipation and congratulations to all concerned on a fantastic forum.

Oh many thanks Northbrook. Is this headstone in Clonallon Church of Ireland graveyard by any chance?

Thought so. Many thanks again Northbrook. I will make a visit some dry day soon.

Incidentally is there a point of contact to access the Church records as they are not available in PRONI?

I'm in the process of getting contacts for all the places of worship to post here - I'll get that sorted asap.

I think in my very young days [late 1940's early 1950's] there was a Thomas Sturgeon lived in Lagan Farm[on the wee road from Lazy Brae to the top of Milltown Street] the Smyth family lived there with him and I don't know if they were related. The younger ones Carol and Earl were with me at Dromore Road school but having moved away myself in 1960 I have no idea what happened to them all and with age the recollection of Thomas Sturgeon has faded badly. I think from my last visit down that way Lagan Farm has nearly completely been built up.Donaghaguy [Wim]

Thanks for posting. Thomas Sturgeon was the last of his family to die; he had two brothers and a sister. Thomas died in 1942.
