This card has been loaned to me by Andy Eccles,

Now, the girl on the front

Image

We are not sure who she is, but as some of you know it was possible back then to have your photograph taken and used on a postcard to send to your friends etc as a novelty item, indeed I have one on site of my great great grandparents, however at the moment the identity of this girl remains a mystery (maybe somebody on site knows her?) It is of course possible she is a relative, but I don't know of any girls called "Rhoda" in the family. The card was made by Allison & co who had studio in the town (as can be seen on the back) and was sent in 1912.

I can't quite make out all of the text, possibly

"Pink Ca????oal" ~x(
17th July 1912
Doll

Rhoda.

So what is the story behind this card then? Well... Maggie is my Great grandfathers sister, and in 1912 they lived in 34 Summer hill - this card was handed to me by Andy Eccles Jr, and his girlfriend lives in.. 34 Summer hill.

Brian - she is beautiful. ;;)
I'm trying to figure out what those two
words are. There are a lot of loops in
the writing, making it harder to
make out.

Could it be something like 'Rink Casual'....possibly a humorous reference to the mode of dress, i.e. suitable for young ladies using the local skating rink ?? Problem is that word on the card looks too long for casual......how about Rink casualty ???? :rotfl: :rotfl:....or perhaps..'Rink Carnival'....must have been festival time ! :rotfl:

My mother (Heatleys) lived in 34 Summer Hill and before that was Barney Carr's family. Would McCabes haved lived there before the Carr's?

Yes, according to the 1911 census, they lived there - Joseph and Sarah McCabe (My great, great grandparents) and their children Charlie, Margaret (Maggie/May Thompson), Elizabeth (Lily Moorehead) And Annie (Annie McCauley)
