From " A Picturesque Handbook to Carlingford Bay "
published 1846

a.d. 432 The landing place of St. Patrick is said that it was Carlingford that he landed when he came back to convert the Irish nation.

1184 John De Courcy granted the ferry of Carlingford to the Abbey of Newry, which he had founded.

1210 King John's Castle was erected

1305 Richard De Lacy, Earl of Ulster, founded and endowed a monastery for the Dominicans.

1326 King Edward II. committed the custody of the Castle of Carlingford to Geoffrey le Blound. In the same year the bailiffs of the town had letters patent conferring
certain privileges and allowances for six years, and an aid towards the walling of the town.

1357 King edward III. granted his son Lionel, then Earl of Ulster licence to hold a weekly market and a yearly fair in his town of Carlingford.
From this Lionel the property descended to Edward de Mortimer.

1388 Edward Loundres was appointed constable of the Castle of Carlingford, with certain allowances for its repairs, as it was then
stated to be out of order and unsafe.

1400 Henry IV. granted to Stephen Gernon constable of the Castles of Greencastle and Carlingford, licence to take the corn and tythes within
the lordship of Cooley for the victualling of the said castles.

1404 The monor of Carlingford and town of Grange, which had previously belonged to the Abbey of Newry, vested by forfeiture in the King
who whereapon granted them in fee to Richard Sedgrave.

1408 Lord Thomas of Lancaster , the king's son, landed here as Lord-Lieutanant of Ireland.

1467 Mint was established by Act of Parliment.

1495 It was enacted that thenceforward only able and sufficience persons of the realm of England should be constables
of the castle of Carlingford.

1501 That in consequence of the town having been repeatedly burnt by the Irish and Scots, King Henry VII. granted certain tolls and customs to
its provost, bailiffs, and commonalty towards enclosing it with a stone wall.

1548 Edward VI. granted to Sir Nicholas Bagnal, knight, the manors of Omeath and Carlingford with the lordship of Cooley,&c

1560 Sir Henry Radcliffe and John O'Neill, Esq., represented Carlingford in the Irish Parliment.

1596 Henry og, son-in-law of Hugh O'Neill ,(then at war with England) endeavoured to surprise the castle of Carlingford.

1642 Sir Henry Fishborne took possession after it had suffered considerable injury from the adherents of Sir Phelim O'Neill.

1646 Perfect freedom of trade was conferred upon Carlingford.

1649 The castle was surrendered to Lord Inchiquin who thereupon converted the Abbey into a stable for his dragoons.

1650 The castle was delivered to Sir Charles Coote and Colonel Venables.

1689 Some of the Duke of Berwick's party set fire to the town and soon after the sick of the Duke of Schomberg's army were removed here.

1690 Lord Carlingford was killed in King Jame's army at the battle of the Boyne.

1750 Commander Thurot remained in Carlingford for the year (1750). He in 1706 invaded Ireland with a French Squadron of three sloops-of-war,
effected a landing at Carrickfergus, and afterwards closed his chivalrous career in a desperate sea-fight with Commodore Elliot and an
English Squadron in narrow sea between Ardglass and the Isle of Man.

1738 Death of George Theobald, fourth Earl of Taafe, after which the title became extinct or forfeited, and George III. afterwards conferred
the title of Viscount Carlingford together with the Earldom of Tyrconnel upon the family Carpenter.

1846 When "Carlingford Bay" was written, the town of Carlingford, the principal portion belonged to Thomas Fortescue, Esq., and portion to
the Marquis of Anglesey, who was then Lord of the Manor.
