While these have no direct link to the area, I found these pictures (over 40 of them) on a French website a number of years ago (long since gone) when doing research, and remembered that I still had them.

They show life behind the French lines (I think) during the war, and I think are fasinating glimpses into "normal" life during that time.

If anybody can identify the soldiers from thier uniforms I can update the description.

I am trully stunned and amazed on the geat quality of prints. there are so many stories being told just at looking at there faces. I actually have a world war 1 camera and can't help but feel in that time the power of these prints.

Wonderful photographs Brian. I can't help wondering how many of those men were cut down later in the war and long before their time.

Brian were these photos taken by a Frenchman named Albert Khan? I think I have seen them before somewhere, they are truly fascinating.

I have no idea where I got them from, but once you mentioned Albert Khan I did a quick search and found this

This site has many pictures, including the ones shown here although I know I did not get them from this site, I will include the link so as anybody that is interested can go and view the hundreds of photos that are there. :D

Brian great photograph's of a really horrible event in our worlds history. My wife had an uncle killed in that war on the 1st July 1916, he was just 19 years old and is buried in the Connaught 2 Cemetary. The photo of the outdoor barber caught my eye, lice was a big problem in the trenches for all the armies so shaving the hair off seemed to be the solution.
